Sewer Vent Pipe UVC Sterilizer

Overview

Despite the public taking precautions, COVID-19 outbreaks continue to occur, particularly in Hong Kong with its dense population. Due to the ability of the virus to spread easily through the air indoors, preventing its transmission is challenging. In response, PolyU start-up Kanon Manufacturing Co Ltd has developed a disinfection device that can be used on vent pipes to ensure the health of building residents.

Problem addressed

Hong Kong has seen numerous cases where bacteria and viruses spread vertically through sewage vent pipes on roofs, infecting residents living on high floors. This phenomenon, known as the ‘wake effect’, poses a significant health risk. This invention blocks this mode of transmission, providing a safer living environment for residents.

Innovation
  • Uses highly efficient UV-C technology to kill over 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, ensuring that air discharged from vent pipes is safe, and protecting the health of residents.
  • Can be powered by solar energy, thus reducing energy consumption and contributing to environmental protection.
  • Precise and lightweight design: can be directly installed on existing vent pipes in buildings without any need for complicated retrofitting.
Key impact
  • Uses UV-C light sources that are both highly efficient and long-lasting. This reduces the need for maintenance and eliminates the need to replace filters or add disinfectants, resulting in lower operating costs.
  • Can save energy while achieving effective disinfection, with operating costs of less than HKD 0.25 per day (based on HKD 1.1/kWh).
  • Features a fully hollow design with an internal diameter of 80mm, in compliance with the Buildings Department's regulations for vent pipes. Its robust structure is also resistant to wind and rain.
  • Can be powered by either solar energy or mains electricity, making it adaptable to the needs of different buildings while reducing energy consumption. Creates a safer living environment for residents and contributes to environmental protection.
Application
  • For use on the vent pipes of a building's sewage system.
