Problem addressed

Elderly with limited mobility are confined to their beds for long periods of time. They may suffer from skin problems such as itching. The green underwear made of degradable fibres can not only alleviate skin issues but also provide odour-resistant and anti-bacterial functions.

Innovation
  • The green textiles have passed AATCC standard of antimicrobial. Apart from bacteria commonly found in hospital such as Cocci and Escherichia coli, it is discovered that these green textiles can repel superbugs like the drug-resistant S.aureus.
  • These green underwear and socks have excellent performance in comfort, breathability, warmth-keeping and smell control, thus able to avoid skin related issues from long-term staying on bed.
  • The green textiles are made of PLA/PHBV filbres, thus able to be degraded under specific conditions.
Key impact
  • Compared to cotton fibres, these green textiles have better pilling resistance - a desirable alternative for patients staying on bed for long periods of time.
  • Apart from underwear and socks, these green fibres are applied in producing a variety of textile and non-textile products, such as shirts, towels, bed sheets, and even diapers.
  • A total of 200 sets of green underwear have been produced for local NGO running elderly care centres.
Application
  • Healthcare garments
  • Home textile products
